David Tennant, renowned for his roles in Doctor Who and Rivals, has surprised fans by getting his very first tattoo at the age of 53. The tattoo is a touching tribute to his wife, actress Georgia Moffett, featuring a simple letter ‘G’ on his wrist. This gesture comes just before her milestone 40th birthday on Christmas Day and ahead of their 13th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve.
Tattoo artist Sym, who goes by @theflavouroftears on Instagram, proudly showcased Tennant’s first tattoo on social media. Alongside a picture of the actor, Sym wrote: “Cat’s out the bag – it was an honour to make this special ‘G’ in the font Georgia for David Tennant’s first tattoo. A wonderful ode to @georgiatennantofficial for her birthday.”
Sym also shared a personal reflection: “Fun fact: one of the first tattoos I made was ‘BadWolf,’ so this was a wonderful full-circle moment to bring this year’s tattoos to a close. As a Queer Non-binary artist, David and Georgia’s allyship and activism for our community has been a shining light. I’m very grateful to have curated this tattoo and look forward to continuing to make special tattoos for special people. See you all in the New Year, lots of love, Sym.”
David and Georgia’s love story began in 2008 when Georgia landed the role of Jenny in Doctor Who’s episode The Doctor’s Daughter. Interestingly, Georgia is the daughter of Peter Davison, who played the fifth incarnation of the Doctor from 1981 to 1984.
Although Georgia was clearly attracted to her co-star, their relationship faced challenges early on. During a 2020 appearance on Gaby Roslin’s podcast with her now-husband David Tennant, Georgia admitted: “I very much forced it into happening, didn’t I? I was very much the driving force. Had I not worked quite so hard, it might not have happened.”
David responded, joking, “That makes it sound like I was resistant, which was not what happened. I thought we were an unlikely life partnership, I suppose. There is a bit of an age gap. Because Doctor Who had run through my life like a stick of rock, to end up marrying the daughter of one of the Doctors, it all felt a bit stupid… that wasn’t really likely to happen. So there were a lot of things against it.”
Despite these early doubts, the couple’s relationship grew stronger, and David expressed gratitude, saying: “There’s a great Tim Minchin song, ‘If I didn’t have you, someone else would probably do’… but I certainly feel like I lucked out. You reach a point in your life when you’re looking for someone and it’s sort of chance which version of that perfect partner ambles along.”
David and Georgia married in 2011, and their love has only flourished since. The couple shares five children—Olive, 12, Wilfred, 10, Doris, 8, and Birdie, 4—while David also adopted Georgia’s eldest son, Ty, 21, from a previous relationship.
To mark a decade of marriage in 2021, Georgia shared previously unseen wedding photos on social media with a heartfelt message: “The happiest day followed by the happiest life. Thanks DT.”
