As society grows more open, many Korean celebrities are opting for tattoos with unique meanings. Recently, fans noticed what appeared to be a small heart tattoo on Jisoo at a concert, while Han So-hee has a tattoo on her arm representing her grandmother’s birth flower. Now, a discreet tattoo trend is quietly taking off in Korea, with Taeyeon joining in. Known as “invisible tattoos,” these designs only glow under certain lighting, explaining why fans hadn’t noticed Taeyeon’s tattoo before.
Unlike traditional tattoos, UV tattoos are created with special UV-reactive ink. Under normal lighting, they show as faint lines, but in ultraviolet or dark lighting, they emit a striking glow. Australian tattoo artist Jonny Hall is known for his expertise in this style. He begins with traditional tattoo methods, then adds lines or patterns with UV ink. When viewed under a UV light, the tattoo appears illuminated, almost like a dazzling special effect. One of his latest works includes colorful star designs, resembling the stained glass windows of a cathedral in their vibrant, dreamlike appearance.
Taeyeon, a fan of “micro tattoos,” usually prefers small, subtle designs on her neck or fingers. For her recent tattoo, she chose a starlight pattern on her finger. Though it looks faint in normal light, it shines vividly under UV light, creating a captivating glow that’s perfect for her on-stage performances.
Since UV tattoo ink must be expertly crafted by experienced artists, and as research on UV ink’s safety for skin continues, those interested in these tattoos should consult professional tattoo artists and ensure that the ink meets international safety standards to maintain both safety and health.
