Gary Neville recently hinted at the possibility of getting his first tattoo after learning that his brother Phil had inked one to commemorate Manchester United’s treble-winning season in 1999.

Historically, the Neville family has been against tattoos, but Phil was swayed when he encountered a tattoo artist at David Beckham’s apartment in Miami. “The best time of my career was 1999, without doubt. That was the best time of my life,” Phil shared during an episode of The Overlap US. He revealed, “I actually got one of ‘1999’ on my arm because it was the best time of my life. I took about a year to tell my mum, and I obviously didn’t tell Gary.”

Gary reacted with surprise at his brother’s revelation and was asked if he might be tempted to get inked after seeing Phil’s tattoo. “I haven’t got any tattoos. Do you think I should go and get one?” he asked. He then jokingly proposed getting a lion on one shoulder to represent England and a devil on the other for Manchester United.

Phil and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher found Gary’s idea amusing. “Oh no, that’s cheap,” Phil grimaced. Gary, slightly taken aback, replied, “Is it?! More so than a number on my arm?” Carragher chimed in, saying, “Phil’s is better. It’s more understated.”

The Neville brothers were pivotal in Manchester United’s historic treble in 1999, a feat that wasn’t matched until Manchester City achieved the same in 2023. However, United has since struggled, not having won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 and finishing eighth last season.
