A cosmetic tattoo studio in Minocqua is now accepting appointments for pro-bono paramedical tattoos for mastectomy patients.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the studio will provide these tattoos free of charge throughout October.

Using specialized flesh tones, tattoo artists aim to recreate the appearance of natural features lost after surgery, help camouflage scars, and more.

Previously, such services were not widely available in the Northwoods until Kelsey Hinterleitner of Carabelli’s Beauty Company decided to make a difference.

“I recognized the need for paramedical tattooing in this area and began exploring how to provide it,” said Hinterleitner.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Hinterleitner is offering hyper-realistic nipple and areola tattoos for mastectomy patients at no cost. She trained in Houston, gaining skills in scar camouflage, creating the illusion of a belly button, and other techniques.

In Wisconsin, 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Mastectomies, which are performed to treat or prevent breast cancer, can leave patients dealing with significant emotional and physical changes.

“The loss of a breast or breast tissue can carry a lot of stigma,” said Hinterleitner. “If I can help women feel better about themselves, aid in their healing, and boost their confidence, it’s truly rewarding. I’m honored that they choose to spend this time with me.”

During these appointments, Hinterleitner closes her studio, and the experience often proves to be emotional. “We go through a range of emotions—laughing, crying, hugging, and even cussing. I’m right there with them,” she shared.

Hinterleitner is also working on providing microblading for eyebrows to help those who experience hair loss due to cancer treatments.

“It’s not a taboo subject. These are our mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters, and we need to support them,” said Hinterleitner.

She plans to continue offering free hyper-realistic nipple and areola tattoos every October in the future.
