An army veteran has made history as the world’s most tattooed woman after a decade-long journey that has seen 99.98% of her body covered in ink—and she’s not stopping yet.
Esperance Fuerzina, 36, from Bridgeport, Connecticut, has officially been recognized as the most tattooed female in the world. Her remarkable achievement also earned her a Guinness World Record for the most body modifications for a female.
Esperance’s journey began when she got her first tattoo on her hip at the age of 21. Now, her tattoos cover nearly every inch of her body, from her scalp to the soles of her feet, including her eyelids, eyeballs, gums, and tongue.
Her first body modification was a tongue split, which she followed with five facial implants and a variety of piercings, including those on her ears, nipples, labia, and gums. Esperance has even gone so far as to have parts of her ears removed to create her distinctive appearance.
With 89 body modifications, Esperance has shattered the previous record, which was held by Maria José Cristerna for over a decade, by a staggering 40 modifications.
While many people choose to preserve memories in photo albums or journals, Esperance uses her tattoos to commemorate her life experiences. She explains, “I’ve had a pretty nomadic life, and with limited space in my (army) pack, I felt I could carry these memories with me wherever I go.”
Each new tattoo has served as a means for Esperance to make sense of her life, transforming dark moments into symbols of strength. These tattoos remind her of what she has endured and have helped her grow both spiritually and mentally.
Over the past decade, Esperance has learned to manage the pain of tattooing through meditation, viewing the discomfort as “a small moment in time for something I can keep for life.”
However, her journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She admits to having some regrets and has learned valuable lessons along the way. Her very first tattoo became her first “cover-up,” replaced by a large and beautiful Phoenix. This experience led her to realize her preference for large, cohesive, flowing tattoos, which have shaped the look she now proudly wears.
Despite attracting attention and sometimes facing negative reactions from others, Esperance remains resilient. She understands that people’s judgments are a reflection of them, not her, and she firmly believes that kindness always prevails.
Reflecting on her achievement of securing the Guinness World Records title, Esperance said, “Being the most tattooed woman and having the most body modifications feels surreal. I am grateful and excited for the future—and, of course, I’m not done yet!”
