Sealed bottles of tattoo and permanent makeup ink, even those labeled as sterile, have been found to harbor millions of potentially harmful bacteria, according to a recent study conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA’s research involved testing 75 samples of sealed tattoo and permanent makeup ink from 14 different manufacturers across the United States. Although the FDA did not disclose the names of these manufacturers, the study revealed concerning results. Approximately 35% of the samples, totaling 26 samples from 10 manufacturers, showed varying degrees of bacterial contamination.

Dr. Katz, one of the researchers involved in the study, noted that while most samples contained bacterial counts below 250 colony-forming units (CFUs) per gram, some samples exhibited much higher counts, reaching up to 105 CFUs per gram.
