Tattoos often carry deep personal meaning, but some can be painful reminders of a past someone wants to leave behind. In Kittanning, Pennsylvania, one tattoo artist is offering individuals a chance to do just that—at no cost.
At 13th Hour Tattoo and Piercing, owner Michael Dietrich is using his skills not only to ink new designs but also to give people a second chance through his monthly free cover-up program.
“For a lot of people that I’ve covered hateful and/or racist, etc., imagery, it’s usually coming from a place where they don’t relate to that part of their lives anymore,” said Dietrich, reflecting on how many of his clients have outgrown or regret the symbols they once wore.
Every month, Dietrich chooses one individual to receive a complimentary tattoo cover-up, prioritizing those with tattoos linked to racism, sexism, homophobia, or gang affiliation. His goal is simple: to help people move on from a past they no longer identify with and replace it with something that reflects who they are today.
“I was looking to do a free giveaway, essentially, so I know that a lot of people can kind of feel that way and it can be a misplaced thing when it comes to income, so I didn’t want that to be a limiting factor for people,” Dietrich explained.
Inside the small, private studio, there’s no judgment—only the promise of a new beginning. Dietrich’s work has already touched many lives, especially those who have experienced deep personal change.
“For instance, recovered inmates, people that have gone through the process. I’ve had people who were initiated [into gangs], and it’s not just one symbol—they have multiple symbols all over their bodies,” he shared.
To enter the giveaway, applicants must be 18 or older. They need to submit a photo of the tattoo they wish to cover along with a brief explanation of why they want it removed.
Interested individuals can apply by visiting 13th Hour Tattoo’s social media pages or by emailing the studio directly.
With each cover-up, Dietrich continues to prove that tattoos don’t have to define someone forever—especially when there’s a chance to turn past mistakes into powerful symbols of healing.
