Local punk, Rikki Fedlimid, expressed regret after getting a tattoo of a dog defecating razorblades to represent his love for pop-punk icons Alkaline Trio, instead of the more popular skull/heart logo, according to multiple reports.
“I didn’t want to be just another person with the same tattoo,” Fedlimid said while flipping through the band’s lyrics for a more unique design. “Everyone I know has that heart and skull tattoo that looks like a third-grader drew it, and I didn’t want to be like everyone else. That’s not punk rock, you know? But when it came time to actually get the tattoo, I panicked and just blurted out the first lyric that came to mind. It’s a great lyric, but not the best tattoo choice. And having it placed really big right on my neck? Yeah, that made everything worse. It’s just like when I got that tattoo of Glenn Danzig killing a baby instead of just the classic Misfits skull logo.”
Despite Fedlimid’s second thoughts, the tattoo artist involved is enthusiastic about the design.
“This might be the highlight of my career so far,” said Marge Whitnet, the artist behind the tattoo. “I’ve always been a huge Alkaline Trio fan, and before this, I’d only been asked to replicate their logo. But with this one, I was able to really get creative and show my dedication to the band. If you look closely, you can see incredible detail in the dog’s strained expression and shredded backside. One of the razorblades even bears a striking resemblance to Dan Andriano.”
However, not everyone in the scene shares Whitnet’s enthusiasm.
“It kind of feels disrespectful,” said Matt Skiba, Alkaline Trio’s vocalist and guitarist. “There are so many other better lyrics they could have chosen. Personally, I would’ve gone with something like a couple of bored angels wearing party hats, watching a vintage TV tuned to Channel 11, where two flies are just going at it. That would’ve had way more meaning.”
In response to the backlash, Fedlimid has already scheduled another session with Whitnet to cover the tattoo with a less graphic image, opting for the iconic cover of Cannibal Corpse’s Tomb of the Mutilated album.
