Billie Eilish, who once vowed fans would never see one of her tattoos, has now had it revealed. In 2023, Annabel Zimmer, daughter of composer Hans Zimmer, shared a photo of Eilish lounging in a Miaou bikini top and Versace sunglasses. Just beneath the bikini string, her chest tattoo—a gothic-style rendering of her surname, Eilish—was partially visible.
Back in November 2020, Eilish told Vanity Fair during an interview, “I did get a tattoo, but you won’t ever see it.” Reports suggested she got the tattoo after winning five Grammy Awards in 2020. Rolling Stone later described the chest tattoo as written in an ornate, gothic font, strategically placed to remain easily concealed.
Eilish has since added more tattoos to her collection. Her dragon tattoo, which snakes up her thigh, was first seen in her 2021 British Vogue photoshoot and later featured in an Instagram video. Another notable design is a cluster of fairies on her hand, which she called her “favorite” in an Instagram post. She explained that the fairies were inspired by Fairyopolis, a cherished book from her childhood, referring to them as her “sweet little guardian angel fairies.”
Eilish’s tattoo journey began after her 2017 announcement that she wouldn’t get face tattoos, saying she only wanted designs that were discreet. By 2018, she had followed through with her plans and got her first tattoo. By 2021, she revealed she had three tattoos, including her surname on her chest, her thigh dragon—her “big boy”—and a third piece. During a Vanity Fair interview, she declared, “Yes, I love myself,” when discussing the surname tattoo.
In October 2023, Eilish debuted an abstract tattoo design running down her back. Fans got a glimpse of it when she removed her shirt during a performance at Music Midtown on September 16, 2023. She later shared a full photo of the intricate design on Instagram.
Despite her fans’ admiration for her tattoos and evolving style, Eilish has faced backlash over her changing appearance. Last month, she addressed the criticism in a series of Instagram posts. Sharing a selfie with an eye roll, she wrote, “Letter to some comments I be seeing sometimes…” She expressed frustration over how her style has been received, recalling how, early in her career, she was criticized for dressing in a boyish manner and told she would be more attractive if she dressed “like a woman.”
Eilish called out the hypocrisy, saying, “Now when I feel comfortable enough to wear anything remotely feminine or fitting, I CHANGED and am a sellout.” Imitating the criticism, she added, “What happened to her? Omg, it’s not the same Billie. She’s just like the rest…” She concluded her message by declaring, “I can be BOTH, you f***ing bozos.”
