The woman known as “Britain’s most tattooed mum,” Melissa Sloan, has expressed her sorrow over being unable to fully participate in her children’s back-to-school preparations due to her extensive tattoos. Melissa, who has over 800 tattoos, has often found herself in the spotlight because of her unique appearance and the challenges it brings.
Recently, the mother of seven from Kidderminster shared that she can’t take her children shopping for school uniforms because of the attention she receives from strangers. She is deeply saddened by how her tattoos impact her family and wishes people could accept her for who she is.
Melissa, 47, said, “It breaks my heart that I can’t take my kids shopping for back-to-school supplies. I usually avoid going to the shops – my partner handles most of our food shopping – but it’s especially painful not being able to do such a normal parental activity.”
She continued, “I want to go out with my kids and help them pick out what they need, but people just won’t leave me alone. When we’re in the back-to-school section, other parents stare, and their kids often point at me. Some even laugh or cry because they’re scared.”
Melissa explained that when she does go out, she feels the need to cover her face with heavy foundation. “It’s tough because my kids need new uniforms and supplies like any other children. They don’t mind that I’m tattooed, so I don’t understand why it’s such an issue for other people, especially parents.”
Nicknamed “Crayola” in the past, Melissa now relies on her partner to help the children with school shopping or resorts to purchasing items online. Despite the negative attention and the difficulties her tattoos cause, she stands by her decision to get them.
“I shouldn’t have to hide my body from others. My tattoos should be accepted and understood. It’s exhausting having to avoid public places because of how I look and people’s lack of understanding,” Melissa said.
While the situation is challenging, she emphasized, “I don’t regret my tattoos – I love how I look. If others can’t handle it, that’s their problem.”
Melissa’s tattoos have caused her issues beyond just back-to-school shopping. Over the years, she has been banned from various places, including her local pub and church, and avoids going to the beach or wearing a bikini to prevent scaring children.
