Sean Frost, the owner of Upnorthtattoos, has left a notable mark on the local tattoo scene since launching his home studio two years ago. Recently, he expanded his presence by opening a retail shop at 12 George Walk in Elliot Lake.

Originally from Peterborough, Ont., Frost brings over 20 years of tattooing experience to his craft. His journey began at age 14 when he and his friends pooled their money to buy a tattoo kit and practice on each other. This early exposure sparked a passion that led them to pursue apprenticeships in various tattoo studios.

Frost’s artistic range is broad, but he particularly enjoys neo-traditional tattooing and cover-ups. “I like to take something a client doesn’t like and transform it into something they love,” he said. This approach highlights his artistic flexibility and commitment to customer satisfaction.

“I love hearing people’s stories and building relationships with my clients,” Frost added. Despite the rewards, tattooing presents challenges. “The hardest part is balancing the long hours with family time,” he admitted, noting the difficulties of managing a business, including handling taxes.

Frost is dedicated to ensuring a smooth client experience. The process begins with an initial consultation, where he discusses the client’s vision and gathers reference images. “I draw until both the client and I are satisfied with the design, and then we proceed with the tattooing,” he explained.

Technological advancements have significantly impacted the industry. “There have been major improvements in machines and comfortable chairs over the past twenty years. iPads are becoming increasingly important, and I believe this trend will continue,” Frost noted. He also emphasizes safety and hygiene, adhering to health board guidelines and using 100% disposable supplies. “I continually seek out small courses to enhance my skills, ensuring my clients have the best and safest experience possible.”

For those considering their first tattoo, Frost advises finding an artist whose work you admire and who makes you feel comfortable. “Don’t choose based on price or availability. It’s permanent, and you want to enjoy looking at it,” he said. He also highlights the importance of following aftercare advice. “We’ve spent years perfecting what works best for tattoo care.”

Shannon Deschenes, a client with over 50 tattoos, values body art as a means of self-expression. “Each tattoo represents a part of my life, reflecting both joy and sorrow. They symbolize my strength,” she said. Tattoos, once seen as rebellious, are now widely accepted and celebrated as an art form.

Looking ahead, Frost aims to move his family to a more private property and expand his business. “We plan to grow our clothing and jewelry sales, introduce our own aftercare products, and possibly return to teaching,” he said. He finds great satisfaction in mentoring.

Frost is also committed to the Elliot Lake community. Since relocating, he has donated gift cards for local competitions and actively participated in community events. “With our new downtown location, we plan to sponsor more events, and our grand opening will hopefully be a major charity event,” he said with enthusiasm.
