A Swedish couple recently participated in a traditional sacred tattoo ceremony at Wat Sawang Arom temple in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand. The ceremony, held to attract good fortune and success, involved receiving tattoos on their hands. They also offered prayers to Thao Wessuwan, a deity associated with blessings and lucky numbers.

The temple, situated in the Khun Kaeo area of the Nakhon Chai Si district, was bustling with activity as both locals and international visitors came together for the event. The ceremony was led by Phra Khru Yatithammuniyut, the temple’s head monk, affectionately known as Luang Phor Pae. The purpose of the ceremony was to provide blessings to attendees in anticipation of an upcoming lottery draw.

Luang Phor Pae performed the tattooing using pink powder to create the “Open Sky, Open Earth, Open Underworld” design on the backs of participants’ hands. This ancient tradition is believed to offer protection and safety. The monk’s spiritual mentors, particularly the revered hermit Phor Pu Reusi, are thought to provide additional protection to those receiving the tattoos.

Among the attendees were Thai locals and visitors from Europe and Asia, all eager to receive the sacred tattoos. Notably, Panisara Vanderroid, a 47-year-old owner of Like Siam Massage in Phuket, Thailand, and her 57-year-old Swedish husband, Chris Vanderroid, were present.

After the tattooing, Luang Phor Pae performed a ritual involving the dripping of candle wax and then tied blessed banknotes around the wrists of Panisara and Chris to ensure good luck and prosperity. Panisara mentioned that they traveled from Phuket specifically for this ceremony, driven by their strong belief in its auspicious benefits. She noted that they frequently seek blessings for luck and success, particularly for their family-owned Thai massage parlor.

In hopes of attracting good fortune, Panisara revealed the serial numbers on their blessed banknotes: her note ended in 354, while Chris’s 100-baht note concluded with 325.

Following the ceremony, the couple paid their respects to Thao Wessuwan, reinforcing their hopes for success and prosperity in their personal lives and business endeavors.
