Addressing a sensitive topic with a detailed procedure, tattoo artist Lena Gabrahana is transforming the way breast cancer survivors view themselves.
Gabrahana, the owner of Blue Rose Beauty and Brow Artistry in Little Rock, specializes in creating “3D nipples” for women who have lost theirs due to breast cancer.
“The hyper-realistic areola offers more than just color where the areolas were removed—it provides a lifelike appearance,” Gabrahana explained.
For breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy and breast reconstruction, these tattoos can significantly enhance their self-image. “When they get out of the shower and see themselves in the mirror, it boosts their confidence,” she added.
During our visit to Blue Rose Beauty and Brow Artistry, we watched Gabrahana demonstrate her craft. Although she used a practice surface for our demonstration, each tattoo she creates for real patients can be profoundly impactful.
Tracy, a patient who lost her areolas to breast cancer, described the effect of the 3D tattoos on her self-esteem. “Seeing myself in the mirror makes me feel like a woman,” she said, describing the 3D illusion as remarkable. “It makes me feel whole and gives me a confidence boost. It’s emotional just thinking about it.”
Gabrahana, a master trainer who travels worldwide to teach her skills, emphasizes that her work goes beyond mere aesthetics for breast cancer survivors.
“It’s a very daunting journey for these women,” Gabrahana said. “But it becomes a triumphant experience once they’ve come through it.”
With her needle and ink, Gabrahana is turning a woman’s body into a canvas of renewal and confidence.
